World leaders are representative of their nation and are held in the highest regard.
Whether they’re traveling to solve a national crisis, negotiating with other leaders to start a new trade deal, they need to be punctual and on-time. So they need a trustworthy timepiece to be on their wrist at all times. What that watch may be is up to them, and is also a representation of their personality and what they represent.
Is the country in a recession or riding the tide of despair for the time being? Are they fiscally responsible or loves to spend? Their watches will do the talking.
So let us at Gracious Watch take you on a worldly tour and see what these leaders have rocking on their wrist.
Some are classy and some are just outlandish, it’s not even funny.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
As the third-longest serving Prime Minister of post-war Japan, Shinzo Abe has held the helm of the Rising Sun with pride.
He is known for his nationalistic stance around Japanese politics, to love their own country and has very right-wing stance in the political spectrum. So it’s not surprising that he
has a Japanese icon on his wrist, which is a Seiko.
He is seen with various Seiko watches in his appearances and in this photo, he is seen with a Seiko Automatic 29 Jewel SARC013 with day/date, and power reserve indicator.
He has also been spotted with other Seiko watches that has GPS capabilities but this is our favorite example that he’s been wearing.
At 39mm, it’s not an empowering piece but definitely embraces his stance on supporting the motherland first.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
The son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau has been making waves in the mainstream media since he was elected into office in 2015, but not for what you think.
Instead of his political stance or his government policies, he’s being touted as a ‘pretty boy’, with everyone having a crush on Canada’s leader.
He’s known as a very fashion-forward and stylish world leader, and it’s not surprising he has a stylish and very eye-catching watch as well: an IWC Portuguese Regulateur.
A ‘regulateur’ is unique, because it indicates the hour separately from the minutes, in their own hour window located at 12 o’clock, with a second indicator located at 6 o’clock and the minute hand taking precedence of the entire wrist real estate.
43mm requires a big wrist in order for it to look like it belongs to the wearer and requires confidence, which this world leader has.
Charismatic and show-offish, the IWC describes the leader from The Great White North to a tee.
United States of America President Donald Trump
The world was shocked by the core and the unimaginable became a reality when the United States of America elected Republican candidate Donald Trump over Democratic candidate Hillary Trump in an election campaign only realized in reality TV.
No one in the world thought Trump would win, but elected he was and was sworn in as USA’s 45th president in 2017.
A real estate tycoon and wrestling icon (that’s right, he was in a Wrestlemania and you weren’t!), it’s not surprising that he has his own signature watch.
From ties to mattresses, he put his name on everything and he has his last name in a line of watches. We at GW didn’t think it was real, buy we found this thread on Watchuseek being on someone’s wrist.
Whether his hands are small or not are up to debate, but one thing is for certain: President Trump isn’t fired from his spot and will be there for quite some time.
Hold onto your hats, America!
Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms
The longest reigning monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth the Second is a dignitary that needs no introduction.
Serving in World War II, she was in active duty representing her country and with flair too: she drives a Land Rover around town and it’s an awesome video to watch if you look for it on YouTube. She is as rugged as she has poise.
Clearly, a woman who knows her place.
Nothing is more fitting for her than a watch of royal presence: A Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse.
The watch is very thin and not imposing at 30mm and has a subdued and classic presence to the wearer.
The Patek and the Queen are like bread and butter because it’s not gaudy, but rather it complements her aura. She doesn’t need to front and to show off because she lets her lifestyle do the talking for her. You don’t believe me? Just look at any Canadian coin, past or present.
It’s not your face on it, now is it?
Former Argentinian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner
A former First Lady of Argentina as well before becoming president in 2007, she held Argentina’s most powerful post till 2015.
She made history becoming the second woman to serve as President of Argentina, the first directly elected female president, and the first woman re-elected to the office.
However, her term wasn’t completely perfect as she had multiple corruption scandals and was known in Argentina as a populist leader, pushing propaganda to get her way.
So is it a shock that she loves flash and glamour? Of course not. So then it shouldn’t be a surprise that she is seen wearing a Rolex Datejust.
Lavished in gold and jewels, let’s just hope that she bought that with hard-earned money and not with dirty money that she had been accused of during her tenure.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte
The Republic of the Philippines has seen their ups and downs with their leaders but none is as intriguing as the current president, Rodrigo Duterte.
Controversial over his support of extrajudicial killings of criminals and drug users to combat crime in the country, the people elected him in 2016 to see a change from the typical aristocratic leaders to someone that the masses can relate to.
He is outspoken, vulgar, and apathetic to the opinion of others. He doesn’t care what his naysayers think because he only cares about the people that put him in power. Whether you like him or loathe him, one thing is for certain: his choices of watches are all over the place like his personality.
He has seen sporting IWC Mark XVI or a Panerai, but the most intriguing one is him representing a local brand.
He has been photographed wearing an Ibarra Plaridel.
Locally designed and assembled in the Philippines, the 38mm watch houses a Japanese Miyota movement and has a classic motif with curved numerals and a gold plated case.
A proud supporter of local production, President Duterte has eclectic taste in watches, which matches his personality.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel
As the leader of Germany, she is at the helm of the most powerful and prosperous nation in Europe. Known as the de facto leader of the European Union, she is the most powerful woman in the world.
Since 2005, she has seen her share of crisis in the EU and was critical in taking care of the financial crisis that plagued the Union in 2007. Firm in her stance and policies, her selection in watches is as strong as her fiscal policies in Germany.
She has been called the ‘Leader of the Free World’, her focus is strengthening not only her country’s financial stance, but also strengthening relations between European countries and the Union’s presence in the international stage. Looking out for her country and others requires a watch that doubles the work ethic that matches her stride.
What else but a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso?
The unique aspect about the Reverso is that it has two watch faces that can be flipped around very easily, giving the watch wearer two time zones to observe and live in. Representing various nations in the Union requires heavy lifting and the Reverso is the right watch for her job.
At 28mm across, it’s not a big watch but the hidden party trick gives it the big wrist presence that it needs. You don’t stay as the world’s most powerful woman with a nonchalant attitude, but a drive to be the best in the world and have the innovative mindset to stay there.
The Reverso is a good fit for Ms. Merkel and hope it serves her for many years to come.
Russian President Vladimir Putin
President Putin’s history of power is as entertaining as his photos that he releases to the public. He’s been in power since 1999 after Boris Yeltsin and has been a mainstay in Russian politics ever since.
His brash personality is felt throughout as he is seen as a natural bad-ass, whether he’s at the wheel of a Formula 1 car or fighting a bear (okay, not really but you could totally picture him doing that).
His macho image is reflective of his wrist game, as he’s been pictured with some of the most expensive and complicated watches ever known. One favorite of the GW crew is the Blancpain Aqua Lung.
This limited edition watch has a 40mm case and is 100m water resistant with a storied diving legacy from Blancpain.
The Blancpain is a rare piece and evocates his tough-guy image that is known throughout the world.
If you don’t like this piece, make sure the KGB isn’t near by.
