Hi Alexander, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Do you mind telling us a little about yourself and your background in this industry
First of all: my compliments on your website! You are bringing all kinds of watches closer to watch lovers around the world.
My dad is a watchmaker, and I’m the co-founder and designer: a fitting combination of two watch aficionados. My father has repaired thousands of watches over the years, and I discovered my own love of old watches and timekeeping equipment in his jewelry shop.
Vienna has a long and rich tradition of the finest watchmaking, and in our own shop we’ve seen to it that countless luxury watches continue to tick, year in, year out.
Each of us has a different role to play: on the one hand, my dad as the expert artisanal mechanic who knows every kind of gear, someone who could take a watch apart and put it together again blindfolded; and on the other hand, my role as the creative mind, always looking for new ways of doing things but never forgetting the bottom line.
What inspires you to get started with Watkins and what do you wish to accomplish with this company?
To make a long story short, I think today’s market needs watches priced far lower than luxury watches, but still fulfilling the highest standards of craftsmanship. We have designed our watches for people with the finest tastes in watches, but not with the deepest pockets!
The US market has its own native brands. But in Europe, only a few brands manufacture themselves; most buy in China and the Far East. And this is something we want to do differently. We plan to build a one-stop factory where we assemble affordable timepieces with our own team. This will result not only in great watches, but great service to the customer as well.
Why the name Watkins? What is the meaning of it
The name is inspired by the globally-renowned track The Glen in New York. Formula 1 races used to take place there, and nowadays NASCAR and Indy cars fight it out on this circuit. Our two-toned date function is an homage to racing: two colors symbolically fighting one another, but more often belonging together.
Where do you think your biggest market will be
Our main target markets are the US, UK and Europe with an eye to the rest of the world. Shipping watches around the globe is no problem. The key is being able to offer after sales support, and we are already liaising with our strategic overseas partners to be able to provide these essential services.
How would you define success for yourself and your company (do you have to reach a certain sales target etc.)
“Success is addictive.”
To me, it means completing a design and knowing I couldn’t have done it any better – it’s perfect.
But we can’t be successful without our customers. Our Kickstarter campaign has given us the opportunity to realize what we’ve been planning for a long time. We will be able to offer a finely-tuned watch with an impressive spec sheet at a highly discounted price.
Of course every designer craves applause and every watchmaker wants to sell watches. Success keeps things rolling. As a small company our sales targets are not set in stone, but we do aim to achieve or exceed our goals within a specified timeframe.
What is your plan for Watkins in the next 5 years, I think that is something our readers would like to know
We are driven to be the best at what we do and we want to maintain the success we have earned in the years up until now. Our immediate goal is to establish our workshop and online presence and eventually initiate more projects like this one.
Where will your watch be available after the launch
Our WATKINS will be available at our online shop. We are not interested in traditional retail or selling via major jewelers, because we aim to keep the price as low as possible, cutting out the middleman and any retail markups. This offers the obvious advantage of a price much lower than what you could find at a brick-and-mortar store.
What do you personally look for in a timepiece
Every design has its own special features. Our WATKINS has a super heated rotary bezel and a big date in an impressive two-color or panda design. This makes it unique and in a class of its own.
We have over 50 years experience in serving our customers. We know their preferences and passions. This is why we have developed a watch which will sell, one sourced from the right parts, featuring a perfect leather strap or bracelet, and unique features. A premium timepiece at an affordable price!
Do you have anything to add for the Gracious Watch readers
