Hi Nic, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Do you mind telling us a little about yourself and your background in this industry
Hi Jeremiah, I am the fourth generation in a family owned business involved in the garment industry. My first ‘Real’ watch, a Breguet dress watch was gifted to me by my father. I was intrigued with how simple yet detailed a watch could be. The way the mechanism moved which could be seen through the exhibition crystal from the back. That spiralled my interest in watches and i couldn’t bear to put something battery operated on my wrist again.
What inspires you to get started with Donkylne and what do you wish to accomplish with this company?
Being a watch enthusiast for a few years now, I have lurked around many watch forums and have seen the rise of many micro-brand watches. However, the main bulk of those, focus on diver watches, minimalistic watches, retro chronograph as well as pilot watches. i have not found a classic simple versatile watch that is subtly different with the right amount of details which can both be worn for important occasions as well as casual ones. Simply put, i wanted to create a micro-brand watch that had just the right amount of details without the hefty price tag and i wanted to provide this to everyone.
Don Kylne watches aims to provide watches that are designed with a character with the right amount of details that you see in High-End luxury watches but not with the same price tag.
Why the name Donkylne? What is the meaning of it
It is actually 2 words, Don Kylne. It has a special meaning to me personally. Like many other brands, it is a name. However, it is a name of somebody whom I highly respect.
Where do you think your biggest market will be
It would be a little difficult to conclude that here as we are going online globally for sales and in this current year that we are in, many people are starting to want something different and produced in small limited quantities. I guess that is also one of the reasons why many micro-brand watches have made it really big and successful. But I do hope we appeal to the entire world.
How would you define success for yourself and your company (do you have to reach a certain sales target etc.)
The first target that we set for ourselves is definitely achieving our goal of $50,000 for our crowdfunding campaign. That would be a small success victory for us as it proves that the market for our watch design and idea actually does exist. So this first step would be a crucial indicator to how the world perceives our idea. At the end of the day, I guess if there are enough people who love our watches and design, that to us is our success. The large amounts of effort that we put into would be paid off.
What is your plan for Donkylne in the next 5 years, I think that is something our readers would like to know
The next 5 years is going to be an exhilarating journey. For much of the first year we are going to focus on getting awareness for our first collection on our crowdfunding campaign. Once it has been funded, we will continue our sales through our online website. At the same time, we will also be looking to work with physical retail outlets in Asia as well as other online sites.
We are also planning to expand our watch collection by exploring minute repeaters/ Unique materials for watch casing to provide a wider variety for our consumers. Our second collection of watches will also be developed in the second year. We are also in negotiations with local fashion brands that are based in S.E.A to provide a better shopping experience for consumers who are in search of unique and limited products.
Where will your watch be available after the launch
In the near future, our watch will be available on our online site at www.donkylne.com after our Indiegogo campaign. However, we are in discussions to have it at more online outlets as well as physical stores. All these information will be updated on our website and sent to our customers.
What do you personally look for in a timepiece
A watch, firstly must be mechanical. I would not consider it if it was not mechanical. There is something artistic about the way the second hand sweeps that really speaks to me. Also, it must be classic and simple with the right amount of details added to it. Depending on the thickness of the watch, a deployant clasp would be convenient and something that i do look out for as well. A Sapphire Crystal with AR coating is a basic must have in all watches. At times, I do look out for complications such as minute repeaters. this is also something that we are very interested in developing. Providing a minute repeater at a fraction of what the watch industry is offering right now.
