The Samsung Galaxy Gear S R750W Smartwatch is a big rectangular smartwatch inspired from the company’s very own line of Gear Watches and fitness armbands. A big curved glass sits at the top of its thick plastic body with a wide plastic strap. The build quality might not be the best but it does resulted to a strong, sturdy smartwatch.  It’s not exactly one of the best-looking smartwatch out there.

The display is of Super AMOLED which makes it very clear and vibrant. Thanks to that display, the Samsung Gear S is still beautiful to look at especially that the watch faces here are limited.

Inside, the Gear S is powered by a fast 1GHz processor. There’s no obvious lag here and the processor should be enough to handle future software updates that Samsung may throw into it. The watch also packs a lot of sensors for different functionalities. It has a heart rate sensor which transmits information to Samsung’s fitness app. The Gear S packs a 300mAh battery which (according to Samsung) could last for 2 days. The battery is pretty good for a smartwatch.

One key-selling point of the Gear S is that it supports SIM card. This is Samsung’s effort to use the smartwatch as a “standalone” although it doesn’t work that way since you need to pair it with a smartphone and a Samsung phone at that, to be able to use the Gear S. The Gear S can act as a good alternative for your Samsung smartphone especially if the phone needs charging and you have to be out for a couple of hours. The watch is supports 3G, messaging and voice calling.

The Gear S is not exactly what Samsung calls as a “standalone” smartwatch. It needs to be paired with a Samsung smartphone before you can actually start using it. So if you don’t have a Samsung smartphone, then don’t bother getting it. But if you do have a Samsung phone and wants to find a good companion for it, the Gear S would be a good choice for you.
